About Emporia

Emporia, Kansas is a great place to enjoy the outdoors, experience local dining and shopping, and get away from the big city. Emporia is located at the junction of Interstates 35 and 335, just east of the Kansas Flint Hills region. We're a short drive (about 90 minutes) from both Kansas City and Wichita.

Emporia is home to large communities of both cycling enthusiasts and disc golfers, so if you love those sports you'll quickly make new friends! Emporia hosts an epic gravel cycling race, Unbound Gravel, annually in June. We have excellent gravel road cycling opportunities, or head downtown to visit one of our three cycle shops. For disc golf fans, Emporia hosts one of the largest PDGA tournaments the world, the Dynamic Discs Open annually in April. You can visit Dynamic Disc's flagship store in downtown Emporia, or tee off at one of the eight disc golf courses around town.

Downtown Emporia is the heart of our community and is a great place for those who love unique, local experiences. Within the span of a few blocks, local restaurants serve up everything from authentic Mexican and Vietnamese, to BBQ, pizza, sandwiches and classic American fare. You'll also find antique stores, a gourmet chocolate shop, brewery, winery, coffee shops, bars, the Emporia Arts Center, Lyon County History Museum, and a variety of other places to explore. The Emporia State University campus sits at the north end of downtown, where you'll find Welch Stadium, Wooster Lake, Peterson Planetarium, National Teachers Hall of Fame, a historic One Room Schoolhouse and more.

If you're traveling with kids, Emporia has ample free family activities, including David Traylor Zoo, the All Veterans Memorial, a new splash pad at Peter Pan Park, and a new hiking trail along the Cottonwood River connecting the All Veterans Memorial to Peter Pan Park. In summertime, you can take a ride on the Sertoma miniature train near the the zoo for just 50 cents.

Emporia is also the gateway to the beautiful Flint Hills region. Coco's Casas can be your home base for exploring neighboring Chase County, cruising the Flint Hills Scenic Byway, or visiting the buffalo at Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve.
